A Future Reclaimed: Abdul Mannan’s Story

Imagine being born as the eldest deaf son to a family that could barely afford basic necessities. This was the reality of little Abdul Mannan.

Abdul Mannan’s early life was shaped by economic hardship and responsibility, growing up as the eldest deaf son in a family of eight where financial stability was a constant concern and his father carried the burden of being the sole provider. From a young age, expectations were placed on him to contribute to the household income, leaving little room for the possibility of an education, which felt distant and largely unattainable.

This trajectory began to shift when his family learned about the Deaf Reach campus in Sukkur, where Abdul Mannan was given access to free education and transportation, removing some of the most immediate barriers that had previously kept him out of school. At Deaf Reach, he was introduced to Pakistan Sign Language, allowing him to engage in the classroom for the first time, build connections, and gain confidence.

Beyond academics, Abdul Mannan discovered a strong interest in cricket that gradually developed into a clear talent through consistent encouragement and structured opportunities to participate in the sport. Supported by his teachers and peers, he was able to pursue this passion alongside his studies.

Today, Abdul Mannan is a Grade 10 student and a recruited player with the Pakistan Cricket Board Deaf Cricket Team, representing not only his city but also the broader Deaf community at a regional level. His journey reflects a significant shift from a childhood defined by limitation to one shaped by opportunity, where access to education has enabled both personal growth and the pursuit of ambition.

His story stands as a reminder of what becomes possible when barriers to education are removed, particularly for children who are otherwise at risk of being left behind, and highlights the role that timely support can play in transforming not just individual lives but entire futures.
